We know that learning to sail can be overwhelming and there is a lot to take in. In an effort to help we’ve created a series of “Bite Sized Lessons” taken straight out or our textbooks - Sailing Made Easy and Basic Cruising Made Easy.

// BE PREPARED WHEN CHARTERING ABROAD
Although there are many amazing sailing destinations right here in the United States, many of us crave to explore destinations far far away, and making that possible is a big part of what the American Sailing Association is all about.
When it comes to chartering overseas a sizable number of countries require an International Proficiency Certificate that lets them know the charterer is trained, qualified and prepared to take one of their boats put to sea. In fact, it's mandatory when chartering in most European / Mediterranean waters. Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and Turkey are all countries that prefer to see the certification or, in some cases, insist the charterer has it.
Fortunately, the ASA 104 course is quite similar to the IPC so students can now earn 104 and simply fill out the online application for the IPC, pay the fee, and become internationally certified. Once that's done, we highly recommend chartering and sailing the Med - you will never forget it.

HOW MUCH BOAT DO I NEED? //
Okay, you’ve checked out of 101, 103 & 104 and the sailing fever is still burning strong. You need to either check into a hospital or buy your first boat - you choose the latter. But what kind should you get? The magazines and websites have you drooling over boats that have tempted you with their sex appeal or indestructible capabilities and you are leaning in every direction.

Boat shows are a great opportunity to meet people and learn more about boating. Even if you’re not in the market for a new boat there are still a lot of things for you to get out of your visit to a boat show.

The author, Bill Streever, does a fabulous job using his career as a biologist to make a book about the wind very interesting. On the scientific side, the author covers topics about the science of wind and what causes it, and its destructive force on the many things it touches. On the historical side he talks about famous storms, shipwrecks and more where the wind has played an important role in shaping history and lives around the world.
