So far we have raised over $15,000 to help ASA schools and instructors from Texas to Florida and the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean who have been hit by recent hurricanes. Schools have lost their buildings and many or all of their boats. Sailing Instructors, school owners and their employees have lost their homes and their ability to make a living. The latest America’s Cup news is that the 36th edition will be sailed in foiling monohulls. Foiling monos will be all kinds of experimental but at least they will likely resemble something similar to a normal sailboat and perhaps that will bring back the audience that left feeling abandoned. One of the cool things about sailing is that there are these age-old traditions just humming along in the background. There’s the particular language that continues to be passed along, There’s superstitions that are fading in terms of adherence but they too are also passed along like folklore. Then there is the naming of boats, which is still just as important as it ever was.
