Hello ASA friends and Family,

If there is a silver lining that is rising from this pandemic it is the resilience, strength and fortitude of our schools and affiliates. Our organization has been able to secure the lines and weather the storm. While not every school has been able to successfully manage the pandemic yet, we have heard from so many owners, captains and instructors who are working hard to bring back business. The amount of new sailors we are seeing at our schools is uplifting. Sailing and boating, in general, are seeing a resurgence as we realize that being out on the water is a great way to relax and find solace in our situation. From youth sailing in Buffalo to families sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, we have seen a tremendous surge of sailors embracing a new way to sail while staying safe and vigilant.

We hope to see you on the water soon. Stay safe and have fun!

What is Your Role on a Boat?

BOAT ROLES

Your ASA sailing education will prepare you to be a skipper on a sailing vessel and with that comes the responsibility of keeping your crew safe and ensuring the safety of the vessel you are sailing. You will also have a crew and responsibilities are spread among those on the boat with you. What type of sailor are you and what role do you take on the boat?

Sail Local: Sailing Colorado
SAIL COLORADO
Drive across Colorado and you’ll notice that there are a lot of mountains and the lack of an ocean. Rivers flow in every direction from the Continental divide and you are more apt to find a ski resort than a sailing school. However, they exist and if you thought that being landlocked would prevent you from learning how to sail, you would be wrong. Colorado is home to plenty of lakes and reservoirs and it is there where Coloradans work on their sailing education.

Captain Stephanie Mansberger Wolters is an ASA trained instructor and USCG Licensed 50 Ton Master Captain with Sailing and Towing Endorsements. Growing up in Morgantown, West Virginia, Stephanie learned to sail at a young age through the Sea Scouts. There she learned to navigate and race on small and large bodies of water. These days she sails out of Fort Myers, Florida with classes through ASA affiliate Island Dreamer Sailing School.

So, You Need Wind to Sail?
WIND TO SAIL
A sailor’s world revolves around the wind and staying aware of the wind’s direction is crucial. When you are just beginning to sail you may feel so inundated with all of the new information that it’s easy to lose track of the wind direction. If that happens, just relax, take a deep breath and feel the wind on your face and skin.
