ONLINE COURSE OVERVIEW

Who is this online class for?

This course is for sailors venturing beyond the reach of immediate rescue or medical care. If you're preparing for extended offshore passages where evacuation is delayed and onboard improvisation is essential, this session is for you. The medical challenges you’ll face are real—and so are the solutions.

What Will I Learn?

This class covers key techniques from the renowned Offshore Emergency Medicine Course, including effective pain control, fracture and dislocation reduction, and advanced wound care. While the material goes beyond traditional first aid, it’s presented with the mariner in mind—drawing parallels to systems thinking and hands-on problem-solving that offshore sailors already know well. Whether it’s fixing an engine or resetting a shoulder, you'll gain the mindset and methods to manage both.

List of Topics:

  • Evaluating risk vs. benefit in remote medical situations
  • Pain management techniques, from over-the-counter to prescription options
  • Understanding the principles behind intervention—when and why to act
  • Techniques for reducing upper extremity fractures and dislocations
  • Wound care in challenging, unsanitary environments
  • When (and how) to consider wound closure techniques
  • Must-have items for your offshore medical kit

the most important skill you hope to never use

RESPOND DECISIVELY, sail farther

This course equips you with the mindset and skills to handle real emergencies when help is not immediately available—when the only responder is you.

SKILL, CALM, & CRITICAL THINKING

With expert instruction from veteran medic and offshore sailor Jeffrey Isaac, PA-C, you’ll learn how to apply calm, systems-based thinking to medical problems in unpredictable conditions. From treating wounds to reducing fractures, this class turns intimidating scenarios into manageable challenges.

Proven Techniques for the Blue Water Mariner

Adapted from the renowned Offshore Emergency Medicine Course, this session brings 30 years of practical experience directly to the sailor’s mindset. You’ll learn not just what to do—but how to think—when every decision matters. Whether you’re planning an ocean crossing or supporting your crew on coastal voyages, this is the medical confidence every offshore sailor needs to sail prepared.
