Here’s a report from Captain Roger Philips who was the Flotilla Leader on a recent trip through the waters of Victoria and San Juan Islands, Washington, USA

The cruise was one of the best ever. Weather was nearly perfect – sunny every day, good winds and calm seas. We had three days of 15+ knot winds nearly all day, and folks had a great time sailing. Other days the winds were variable, with some sailing, some motoring, some motorsailing.

The welcome reception in Friday Harbor at the San Juan Island Yacht Club overlooking the harbor was an excellent mixer as people got to know each other. Victoria was a great hit, with many making their way by bus to Butchart Gardens. Some of us discovered the little-known secret that the Parliament Building legislators’ dining room is open to the public for breakfast – imagine that! We had superb food and service one morning there among the ornate and impressive surroundings. Spending two nights at the marina just at the foot of the Empress Hotel and Parliament Building, we were entertained every night by amazingly good street musicians and an incredible unicycle juggler. Group dinner at the Guild Freehouse in a private upstairs room. Wonderful food and bar. Overall, 10 boats and 37 participants.

Flotillas are a great way to explore new cruising grounds, and meet new sailors. You can enjoy the freedom of skippering your own boat but have comfort in knowing that a Flotilla Leader is on hand to help with navigation, local weather, and to ensure you get the most out of your sailing vacation! See upcoming flotillas and sign up for one today!
