ASA 101 Study Cards – possible erroneous Definition
Greetings,
I recently bought the ASA 101 Study Cards: Basic Sailing Vocabulary & Concepts pack as part of my preparation for an ASA 101 class.
While using these cards, I came across a possible erroneous Definition:
SAILING TERM:
BOOM TOPPING LIFT
DEFINITION (on card):
The line used to control the main boom and thus also to trim the mainsailThis is, incidentally, also the (I believe correct) Definition used for the
SAILING TERM:
MAINSHEETcard.
Reading the Sailing Made Easy textbook for the ASA 101 class, I find on page 25 the following text describing a BOOM TOPPING LIFT (2nd column, next to last paragraph):
“When the mainsail is raised, it holds up the boom. To support the boom when the sail isn’t set, some boats are rigged with a rope or wire, called a boom topping lift or boom lift, that runs from the top of the mast to the aft end of the boom.”
Hence, for this BOOM TOPPING LIFT card, a DEFINITION something like:
“A rope or wire that runs from the top of the mast to the aft end of the boom to support the boom when the mainsail isn’t set.”
would probably be more appropriate and helpful?
Sincerely,
Audun Runde
