Hi. I’m Kristen. Most folks call me KB – you can too.

I’m a full-time sailing educator and coach based in Annapolis, Maryland, with more than 25 years of experience helping sailors go faster, point higher, and shout “starboard!” with confidence (and maybe a little flair). For the past 10 years, I ran Gale Force Sailing, where I offered personalized coaching for everyone from first-timers still figuring out which end of the tiller to hold, to seasoned racers fine-tuning their trim for that extra tenth (sometimes 100th) of a knot.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to lead programs at J World Annapolis and the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore, and I’ve worked with a wide range of sailors—from midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Basic Sail Training program to first-time community sailors as a board member for Hudson River Community Sailing in New York City. I am passionate about conservation and protecting our environment, and I started a partnership with Oceana called the Ocean Conservation Yacht Club.

These days, I wear a few hats (and more than a few lifejackets). I serve as Director of American Sailing Performance and North U, a performance-focused education program. At North U, we help sailors of all levels—from new racers to seasoned competitors—sail smarter and faster. We offer a mix of online courses, webinars, seminars, and on-the-water clinics, covering everything from racing rules and tactics to sail trim, boat handling, and weather. It’s all about making racing more approachable, more fun, and a whole lot faster.

I’m also proud to serve as founder of Annapolis Community Sailing, a nascent nonprofit that works to make sailing more accessible, inclusive, and irresistibly fun for everyone.

Whether I’m coaching a regatta, leading a clinic, or just helping someone find the joy in their first successful jibe, I’m always excited to share what I’ve learned—and keep learning right alongside my students.
