No bad days
There are no bad days on the water. This morning I sailed with 40 sailors… in the sideways rain and the biting cold. It would have been super easy to skip today, stay on the couch, and surf the web, but instead… we hoisted sails, tacked, gybed, laughed, and had a great day being happy ducks on the water.

Ha! You are right about that. I’ve sailed in snow a few times – it is so cool how you can “see the wind” as the snowflakes flow across the sails.

I did a boat delivery in the snow once. It was about 35 degrees when I set out, and the temperature dropped from there. Water temps were about 35 as well, so no falling in. I should have tethered in, in hindsight. However, a snowstorm kicked up and created a complete white-out. I could see a few boat lengths in each direction, but no land. Thank goodness for a compass! Finally, it cleared up a bit, and the Coast Guard decided to come out and run drills that day. They hovered quite a bit above the water, dropped a dummy out, and practiced sending a ladder and a diver down from the helicopter to get the dummy. Snow was swirling up with the helicopter blades in the most amazing upward tornado. I have video from it, but it’s hard to make out all the details. Anyway, sailing or motoring in snow is fun as long as you’ve got your hot tea and warm soup in a thermos!
