So this is what my best man, who used to race on Lake Ontario before moving to Lake Norman, called me. I just “inherited” a Columbia C30 from my uncle. I have her at Wilson, plan on ASA 101 in May, but will take any help/pointers/clues to sailing. Never wanted a powerboat, and now that I’m retired at 60, looking forward to the challenge and fun.Hope to move her to the Low Country in a few years.

Mark, congrats on getting the new sailboat! Sailing is one of those things that the more you do it, the more you learn. When I was getting into sailing bigger boats, I asked (begged) to get on a lot of people’s boats so I could gain experience where I knew I didn’t have it yet. Formalized classes like ours (like the 101 you mentioned) will bring you such a long way, but while you’re waiting, you can get a lot out of just sailing with other people on their boats. They’re usually happy to talk about what they know…

Well, WYC member meeting is this Sunday, so I can shop myself around. After all, since I’m retired now I have nothing but time.
