What are the “two most important things” you teach new sailors?
I recently read an article by Mike Basham, Rear Commodore for Training with NPSC, about his approach to teaching ASA 101 students. He highlights two key points he always emphasizes on the water:
-
Ease the vang and mainsheet before hoisting the mainsail so the sail can rise properly and the boat sails efficiently.
-
Before jibing, take the mainsheet out of the cleat and be ready to ease it quickly so the boat doesn’t heel excessively.
His point was that while sailing involves countless skills, focusing on just a few “very important things” each lesson helps students learn more effectively.
Question: For instructors and experienced sailors here: What are the top two or three things you always stress when teaching beginners, and why?
