Radar is one of the most capable navigation tools available to sailors. When you know how to use it well, it becomes your eyes in limited visibility, your early-warning system for squalls, and a powerful companion for collision avoidance. ONLINE COURSE OVERVIEW

This intermediate online class digs into radar as a full navigation system, not just an optional add-on at the helm. You’ll learn how to tune your unit, read the display, evaluate targets, and use advanced tools to make smarter choices in real time. Expect practical guidance, real-world examples, and instruction designed specifically with sailboat owners in mind.

Who is this online class for?

This online class is ideal for sailors who already use radar at a basic level and want to take the next step. It’s a great fit for cruisers, coastal and offshore passagemakers, and anyone responsible for watchkeeping who wants a deeper understanding of radar’s capabilities. If you own a radar unit but aren’t using it to its full potential, you’ll get a lot out of this online class.

What Will I Learn?

You’ll learn how to interpret what you see on the screen, adjust your settings for the conditions, and use tools like EBLs, VRMs, RMLs, and AIS overlays to improve both navigation and safety. You’ll also get insight into tracking weather cells and understanding what your radar can’t reliably show you. By the end of the online class, you’ll be able to make cleaner, faster decisions with confidence.

List of Topics:

  • COLREGS and radar responsibilities
  • Radar as a core navigation tool
  • Squall recognition and avoidance
  • Tuning techniques and display modes
  • Radar for collision avoidance
  • Working with AIS overlays
  • Understanding radar limitations
  • Tools and accessories that expand your radar’s capabilities
  • Managing multiple targets at once

FINDING YOUR WAY THROUGH THE FOG

From Shadows to Clarity

Radar transforms the way sailors perceive the world around them, especially when visibility fades and the environment becomes more complex. Fog, darkness, squalls, and crowded waterways can turn even familiar passages into a challenge. This online class removes the uncertainty by showing you how to interpret radar with confidence, understand what the screen is telling you, and make smart, timely decisions when conditions demand it. You’ll learn how to stay aware, anticipate risks, and navigate safely no matter what the horizon looks like.

Smart Navigation for Modern Sailors

Radar is far more than a collision-avoidance backup, it’s a core navigation tool for cruisers who want precision and awareness in all conditions. This online class goes beyond basic operation to teach techniques you can use every time you stand watch. You’ll learn how to fine-tune your display, distinguish hazards from harmless echoes, and use advanced tools like EBLs, VRMs, RMLs, and AIS overlays to build a complete picture of your surroundings. Through real examples and practical demonstrations, you’ll develop strategies for identifying squalls, choosing safe routes, and managing multiple targets at once with calm, deliberate control.

A Must for Confident, Capable Watchkeepers

Perfect for sailors ready to deepen their understanding, this class bridges the gap between simply having radar and truly using it to its full potential. Whether you’re a coastal cruiser refining your skills or an offshore passagemaker responsible for nighttime watches, you’ll leave with sharper awareness and a clear sense of how radar supports safer navigation. If you’ve ever looked at your radar screen and wished you understood it better, this is your chance to gain the knowledge, techniques, and judgment that make every passage—day or night—safer, smoother, and more rewarding.
