Zeke – Charter provisioning is so much fun. Exploring what is in the grocery store is a great way to get to know the places where you are chartering. That said, some venues (think BVI) I love to just pay the fee to have the charter company have the groceries loaded on the boat. You still get to make all the choices; but you can arrive and head out without the challenge of hitting the store. I have lots of funny stories of trying to get 10 days worth of food back to the boat across some less than paved roads in some far flung places… sometimes its worth the fee!

Tip for provisioning on a bareboat charter. Buy what you can’t live without! For some, it’s coffee, others need their sugar fix, and maybe even some chocolate for those sweet moments. But I also totally agree with Kristen – hitting the local farmer’s market is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the culture and connect with the locals. I love picking up things I’ve never seen before and asking questions about their cheeses, wines and local breads. Even if there’s a bit of a language barrier, that’s part of the fun! An adventure in itself.
