After this Safety at Sea class, four days later, the Mexican training ship Cuauhtemoc struck the Brooklyn Bridge. That area can report up to three or four knots of current. The current was approximately 0.3 in the direction of the bridge at the time of the crash.
Since this allision was so soon after our course; I wondered how many of you thought about that ratio of current to time that I presented.
For every knot of current, for every minute, you will travel 101 feet. 1:1:101.
I certainly was thinking about that when watching the videos of the Cuauhtemoc striking the bridge.
*NTSB reports the vessel accelerated toward the bridge at six knots when it hit, a key issue in the investigation.
