Long ago when I was in the process of obtaining my Private Pilot License, my flight instructor stressed electronic navigation equipment is not always reliable. Learning navigation is essential.

I carried that philosophy forward to sailing and has paid off quite well. The first time was during my ASA 108 course out in the middle of Lake Superior. The other experience was out in the Pacific Ocean during a race hundreds of miles from the coastline when the vessel took a direct lightning strike.
