Mastering boat control in tight quarters is less about muscle memory and more about understanding the invisible forces of wind and current. In this online class, Captain Rick Robey breaks down the physics of maneuvering into clear, practical concepts you can use immediately in crowded marinas.

Live Q&A
Most sailing stress does not happen offshore. It happens at slow speed, in front of an audience, with wind on the beam and current pushing you toward someone else’s gelcoat. This course focuses on what really matters in tight quarters: understanding how wind, current, hull shape, and prop walk interact at low speeds. When you understand the forces at work, docking becomes deliberate instead of reactive.

Online class overview

Mastering boat control in tight quarters is less about muscle memory and more about understanding the invisible forces of wind and current. In this online class Captain Rick Robey breaks down the physics of maneuvering into clear, practical concepts you can use immediately in crowded marinas.

Who is this online class for?

This online class is designed for beginner to intermediate skippers who want more confidence when docking in busy marinas. If you have ever felt tension rise as you approach a slip, or if you avoid tight spaces when possible, this class will give you the tools to think clearly under pressure and execute controlled, confident maneuvers.

What will I learn?

In this online class, you will gain a working understanding of how wind and current interact with your boat’s geometry at low speed. You will learn how to identify and use your vessel’s pivot point, apply controlled throttle bursts, and manage environmental forces before they manage you.By the end, you will have a practical toolkit you can apply immediately to arrivals, departures, and close-quarters maneuvering.

List of topics:

  • Physics of handling: How wind, current, and hull shape affect low-speed control
  • The pivot point: Understanding rotation and throttle timing
  • Precision control: Effective throttle-burst techniques
  • Spring-line strategy and prop walk management
  • What to do when a maneuver does not go as planned
  • Powerboat specifics: Twin-engine handling for outboards
  • Crew communication during docking evolutions
