Alaska is a dream destination for many cruisers, offering dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and some of the most unforgettable sailing anywhere in the world. But cruising Alaska requires a different mindset than many coastal cruising grounds. Vast distances, remote anchorages, changing weather, powerful tides, and limited services make preparation and local knowledge essential.

Online class overview

This online class provides an experience-based introduction to cruising Alaska by boat, from understanding the character of the region to planning your route, preparing your boat, and making the most of your time on the water. Gio and Julie share practical insights gained from years of cruising the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, helping sailors understand what makes this region unique and what they should know before heading north.

We’ll explore the major cruising areas of Southeast Alaska, the Inside Passage, and beyond, discussing what defines each region, how conditions change as you travel north, and what sailors should expect along the way. You’ll learn about weather patterns, tides and currents, anchorage considerations, provisioning, communications, wildlife encounters, and the realities of cruising in remote wilderness.

Beyond logistics, this online class explores what makes Alaska such a special cruising destination. From watching humpback whales feed in glacier-carved bays to navigating through narrow channels surrounded by old-growth forests and snow-capped peaks, Alaska offers experiences that reward sailors who slow down, stay flexible, and embrace the adventure.
