Modern Sailing Success Stories

Kate and Warren Templeton, Modern Sailors and Now Boat Owners!

Sailing has become a lifetime passion for Kate and Warren. They recently purchased a sailboat of their own and hope to enjoy the wind in their sails for a long time to come. They plan to cruise the Delta this summer, and later, go on to explore the Channel Islands and California Riviera. Sailing the Bahamas and a return to the Caribbean are also high on their destination wishlist.

Mary Elkins, Modern Sailor and Now Full-Time Cruiser

I took the ASA 101/103 Basic Keelboat/Basic Coastal Cruising Combination Course with our COO, Captain Bill Moreland as my instructor. That course was the beginning of many character-building and life-changing sailing experiences to come. At first, I was terrified to make a mistake and timid about giving directions to the crew from the helm. With Bill’s coaching and encouragement, I began to slowly gain confidence. A few weeks after earning my ASA 103 certification, I skippered my first sail with supportive coworkers as my crew. In the year and a half that followed, I logged over 100 days on the water by sailing after work and on weekends with my friends and mentors at Modern Sailing.

Ken and Linda Hargreaves, Modern Sailors and Now Catamaran Owners!

2020 was a monumental year for MSC club members Ken and Linda Hargreaves. Last May, they they crossed the Pacific Ocean for the first time as delivery crew aboard a 55-foot catamaran. Another major milestone was reached in early December with the long-awaited purchase of their first boat, a 2014 Lagoon 450 catamaran!

Sean Crawford, Modern Sailor and Soon-to-Be Cruiser

Sean began with a Skippered Sail in July, and since August, has completed ASA courses 101 through 104, ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran, ASA 118, Docking Endorsement, and the Night Sailing, Mastering Sail Trim, and Heavy Weather Sailing Clinics. He also joined MSC’s Farallones Day Trip and the Discover San Francisco Bay by Sail: Local Destinations and Beyond webinar.
