Marina del Rey, CA — American Sailing proudly celebrates Chairman of the Board Peter Isler on his induction into the prestigious America’s Cup Hall of Fame Class of 2026, announced by the Herreshoff Marine Museum / America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Isler will be honored alongside Glenn Ashby, the Beken Dynasty, and Lowell North at the official induction gala on October 16, 2026, at the New York Yacht Club.
A Leader in Sailing—On the Water and Beyond
Peter Isler’s career spans decades of elite competition, education, and leadership in sailing. Best known as navigator aboard the legendary STARS & STRIPES, Isler played a pivotal role in two America’s Cup victories—first as a challenger in 1987 in Fremantle, Australia, and again as a defender in 1988. He later contributed to additional campaigns with Team Dennis Conner and BMW Oracle Racing, consistently serving in critical afterguard roles.
Beyond the America’s Cup, Isler’s offshore racing achievements are equally remarkable, including victories in the Transpacific Race, Newport to Bermuda Race (twice), San Francisco to Hawaii Race, and the ORC Doublehanded World Championship in 2023.
A Lasting Impact Through American Sailing
While his competitive résumé is extraordinary, Peter Isler’s enduring legacy is deeply rooted in sailing education.
As co-founder of American Sailing in 1983, Isler helped build one of the most influential sailing education organizations in the world. Today, American Sailing has certified over half a million sailors, advancing boating safety and accessibility across the United States and beyond.
Now serving as Chairman of the Board, Isler continues to guide the organization’s mission to make sailing more inclusive, approachable, and impactful for future generations.
“Peter Isler represents the very best of what sailing can be—technical excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to sharing knowledge,” said Cindy Shabes, President, American Sailing. “His induction into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame is not only a recognition of his achievements at the highest level of the sport, but also of his lifelong dedication to growing sailing through education.”
Educator, Author, and Voice of the Sport
Isler has long been recognized as one of sailing’s most effective communicators. A graduate of Yale University and 1976 Intercollegiate Sailor of the Year, he has translated complex sailing concepts into accessible knowledge for sailors worldwide.
He is the co-author of the widely read Sailing for Dummies, along with several other titles including At the Helm: Business Lessons for Navigating Rough Waters and Peter Isler’s Little Blue Book of Sailing Secrets. Since 1991, he has also served as Editor-at-Large for Sailing World Magazine, helping educate and inspire readers through both writing and commentary.
His voice has reached millions through broadcast coverage of the America’s Cup, where he became known for breaking down complex technical strategy into clear, engaging insights.
Honoring a Career That Defines Excellence
The America’s Cup Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport through performance, innovation, leadership, and impact. Isler’s induction reflects not only his elite competitive achievements but also his profound influence on sailing education and community growth.
As American Sailing looks to the future—expanding access, strengthening safety, and inspiring new sailors—Peter Isler’s leadership remains a guiding force.
