Did you plan to become a sailor? Or did it just happen?
Posted by American Sailing on June 29, 2026 at 10:55 amThere are so many ways we find ourselves on the water, harnessing the wind. Sometimes it takes planning and perseverance. For others, becoming a sailor is a complete surprise.
What was your own sailing journey like?

I love this article!
As parent, you hope you are doing the right thing for your kids, ya know?
I think a lot of people can relate to this as first time sailors – a little apprehensive, a little scared of the unknown but really excited to start a new experience!
I look back at these pictures and I am amazed at all the adventures we’ve had together – all the wonderful places we’ve visited. It’s like when those pictures flash on your computer screen when you first boot up and your like “Hey! I’ve been there!”
I think about of the stunning over-the-water bungalows in Tahiti and you know what? A catamaran IS an over- the- water bungalow! And it travels with you! AND you can bring along your friends/family. How about that?
There is no other feeling like exploring the world by water. It’s just different and I absolutely love it!
Thank you, Dionna!
Love,
Yr Mom

It just happened, 3rd generation, I was given a boat when I was 8. There was a sense of freedom and adventure. Every trip was an exploration. I think today parents would be considered negligent if they let an 8 year old wander freely in an open boat tens of miles from home. Back then it was just playing out doors.

I always wanted to learn how to sail – a dream I always held onto, but never really thought would become a reality. I finally realized my initial dream of learning how to sail later in life. I cherish every moment.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think learning to sail would lead me on a path to becoming an American Sailing instructor playing a small role assisting others pursue their sailing dreams, racing across oceans to stand proudly with my crew mates on the final podium, being a race skipper in the Great Lakes, and making dear friends from across the globe.
