Go With The Flo Adventures is located on the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina. Our fleet is berthed at Marshes Light Marina on Roanoke Island in the town of Manteo, the site of the first English settlement in the New World – 1587. Surrounded by the Roanoke, Croatan, Pamlico, and Albemarle Sounds, our sailing grounds are extensive and include numerous anchorages and towns to visit before, during, and after your class.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are known for their windy conditions. Prevailing winds generally come from the southwest or northeast and typically range from 10 to 13 knots. These conditions were ideal as the Wright Brothers developed powered flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Numerous other wind dependent sports and activities are enjoyed throughout the Outer Banks, including hang gliding, windsurfing, kite surfing, wing surfing, and more recently wind, kite, and wing foiling. Of course, warm water and a mild, windy climate are also the perfect ingredients for learning to SAIL!
Your Captain, Teacher, and Coach during your lessons is a career educator (retired) who has combined his love of teaching and sailing to help you achieve your sailing goals. Captain Greg has his OUPV US Coast Guard License and a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership. He is certified to teach ASA 101 through 118 Sailing Courses and takes great joy in helping each student master the skills and knowledge to be a competent and safe skipper or crew.
We meet each student where they are, both in knowledge and skill level. When new skills are mastered, we will quickly move on to more advanced activities. We’ll balance classroom time with practical time on the water, with about 25% of the class being classroom or dryland, and the remaining 75% being on-the-water practice.
Each class is taught with the understanding that the student has reviewed and studied the course material from the class textbook prior to coming to class on the first day. This “flipped classroom” approach allows our instruction to move quickly, improves learning and retention, and maximizes your time on the water.
Our school is open during the spring and fall shoulder seasons to take advantage of cooler temps and off-season rates for lodging. Rental homes, Airbnb, Hotels, and Camping sites are all available within a short drive of our base at Marshes Light Marina in Manteo, NC, on Roanoke Island.
