When do you put a life jacket on? When do you require your crew to put a life jacket on?

Safe boating dictates everyone wear a life jacket at all times —but the reality is often different, with adult sailors and boaters choosing to forgo a PFD in favor of comfort, ease of movement or simply deciding, “the conditions aren’t risky enough today.”

Briar’s story is a reminder to us all that life jackets save lives. Give it a read and let us know what you think:

For me it’s an inflatable, most of the time: depending on the boat, the conditions and the body of water. (Because I would just be lying if I said I always where a PFD)

If you are on deck, the PFD is on you is my philosophy. Just because the “weather is light” doesn’t guarantee someone might not lose their balance and inadvertently fall overboard. And who knows what body part of that person might hit something on their way going into the water.

I was a competitive swimmer for 15 years. I saw a lot of things during that time. One thing I never saw was an unconscious person swim.
