At St. Michaels Sailing Charters, our ASA sailing school offers a hands-on learning experience designed to build real confidence on the water. Located in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay, our program combines professional instruction with one of the most scenic and accessible sailing environments on the East Coast.
Students train aboard our modern Leopard 44 catamaran, Epiphany, a spacious and stable cruising yacht that provides an ideal platform for learning. Catamarans offer excellent visibility, wide decks, and a comfortable sailing experience, allowing students to focus on sail handling, navigation, and boat control while enjoying a safe and supportive environment.
Courses follow the American Sailing Association (ASA) certification system, allowing students to earn internationally recognized credentials while developing practical sailing skills. Training covers essential seamanship including sail trim, docking, anchoring, navigation, safety procedures, weather awareness, and crew communication. Every lesson emphasizes real-world application so students gain experience that translates directly to cruising and charter sailing.
The Chesapeake Bay is one of the best places in the country to learn to sail. Its protected waters, steady winds, and countless creeks and harbors provide ideal conditions for both beginners and advancing sailors. Students learn to read tides, navigate working waterways, and handle a boat in a variety of wind and weather conditions, all while surrounded by classic waterfront towns and historic maritime scenery.
Our instructors are experienced sailors who focus on patient, personalized instruction. With small class sizes, students receive plenty of time at the helm and direct coaching throughout each course. Whether you’re brand new to sailing or working toward advanced cruising certifications, our team ensures that every student develops both skill and confidence.
